DATE FOR THE DIARY CHRISTMAS PARTY

I started this Christmas post the day after Thanksgiving. In many places in the world, autumn is sunny and warm, the first hint of fall colours painting the trees in red and gold. Not in Canada. Here in so-called “sunny Southern Alberta”, this was the scene that greeted me when I woke up this morning.Yes, that’s right. Heavy snow with more falling, and no end in sight. But rather than bemoaning the tragedy of Canadian seasons – Winter-Is-Coming, Winter, Second Winter, and Road Construction – I decided to write about what I love about the snowy time of year:
Christmas!
My favorite memory of Christmastime is from early childhood. Each December our family would head out to the mountains to find a tree, a tradition that lasted until I was in my teens. I recall my father driving up winding backroads to the best “Christmas tree spot”, an open slope on the westward side where pine trees could get enough sunlight to be lush, but were protected enough to be sturdy and straight. The group of us: my mother and father, brother, sister and I, would bundle ourselves up in hats, gloves and boots, then set off to find that year’s perfect tree.
In movies, it seems easy to climb a snow-covered hill, but the truth is, hiking through snow is slow-going, sweaty work. You’re either too cold from the inclement temperature or too hot from exertion. Snow melts on your hat and slush falls down your neck. You can barely move from all the layers. Searching for a tree, my legs would tire and my toes would get cold. My enthusiasm would wane. I’d find every excuse to stop as we hiked what felt like forever. And then finally we’d find “the right tree”.
My father would let us kids chop it down. In my memory, the axe was always too heavy, and in the end, he did most the work, but the effort was what mattered. The scent of sap and pine needles, stuck to woolen mittens, is a smell that takes me back. When we were done our turn at pummeling the bark, Dad would take over, and the tree would be down in seconds. Success! My father would tie a rope to the trunk of the tree, and the kids would start to pull.
If getting up the mountain was hard, going downhill – three unruly children with a tree in tow – was twice the ordeal. The bound tree either went down sideways on its own trajectory or refused to budge at all, caught on a snarl of brush or embedded in a snowbank like an arrow. I remember my mother laughing as we tried to get it going. Sometimes one of us would climb on top and try to “ride” the Christmas tree down the hill back to our vehicle. (That never worked.) But it didn’t stop us from trying.
Eventually one or both of our parents came to our rescue. The tree was hauled back to the road by adult hands and the three of us kids watched as my father and mother tied it to the roof with a complicated web of rope. Then came the long drive home as we slowly defrosted in the backseat, the tree bouncing merrily atop us. The sky was never as dark, the stars never so bright as in my memories of Christmastime, and the sweet sound of carols was a fitting soundtrack.
Reaching the city and our house, we’d head inside, and my mother would set out our sopping clothes to dry before bundling us into pyjamas. The last tradition of that night was always a mug of hot chocolate in front of the fire. I’d want to decorate the tree immediately, but my parents would always insist the Christmas tree had to “defrost” in the porch for the night, or the needles would fall off. (As an adult, I now realize this is just adult-speak for “I’ve been out in the woods with three little kids and I’m too tired to deal with this right now”, but in my childhood, that statement held a magical warning.)
Cup in hand, I’d sneak into the porch to check on the branches. The smell of damp wool, taste of cocoa and mingled scent of pine and home are forever woven into my memory.
The adventure of chopping down a Christmas tree is the pinnacle of many wonderful Christmas events I recall from those long-ago years. In it family, laughter, and fun are bound into one.

Merdeka, Merdeka Merdeka -59

The first day of the National Day rehearsal not only caught the attention of the locals but it also wowed the tourists here.
Interestingly, some of the tourists thought that the country was celebrating the National Day today before realizing that it was merely a rehearsal.

The celebration in this country is more colourful and I can see that there is more participation from the participants compared to last year.
Although it is only a rehearsal today, I am definitely eager to come as it is close to my heart and I want to take a closer look at the preparation ahead of the Aug 31 celebration.
The National Day parade and procession on Aug 31 will witness 10 segments of performance - patriotism, public services, economy, animation, sports, self-esteem, public order, national security, air show and national unity.
Last year's celebration theme, 'One Heart, One Soul' (Sehati, Sejiwa) is maintained for 2016 because of the need to foster the spirit of unity that has long been practised by Malaysians.

Sunday Travel to Gold Coast

A trip to Gold Coast is not complete without a stop to the world famous surfer’s paradise. Swim in the sun, pick up surfing or just pick up a book and read with the sound of crashing waves in the background, stepping on this beautiful beach of Surfer’s Paradise is a must for any tourist visiting. Even if you are the sort that gets bored at the beach pretty quickly, there are still lots to shop/eat in the area of Surfer’s Paradise such as the Wax Museum, Ripley’s believe it or not, Hard Rock Cafe, Hurricane restaurant and many others!

Selfie.......

After you manage to convince the family to actually leave the resort, take them down the coast to a countless number of beaches. With every water sport conceivable on offer, trips to the beach are an idyllic way to keep the children busy and get some much-needed downtime for you.

This would make for a fantastic day out to get some exercise, fresh air, and take in the magnificent coastal views.

After all that natural beauty in the hinterland and sitting on sandy beaches, it’s time to head to the famous theme parks of the Gold Coast. Make sure to book into the parks early to beat the crowds and leave time for late afternoon naps.

The Eagle Has Landed

BNM has conducted two briefing sessions on 16 June (Thursday) and 17 June 2016 (Friday) at Theatrette, Muzium dan Galeri Seni, Sasana Kijang, Bank Negara Malaysia.

Many local designer don't know they must come to the briefing sessions to know what kind of banknotes they will be designing. BNM don't stated in their statement that it is necessary to go to any of the briefing sessions. I am not sure if only people who go to the briefing sessions are allowed to join the competition.

From the information we received, BNM distributed a CD cointaning information, rules and regulation about the competition during briefing sessions on 16 and 17 June.

If any of you local designer who don't go to the briefing session, you might want to try to contact the persons who are in charge of the competition (you can get their contact in my earlier post). Maybe they can give you the CD. If they can't give you any information, you need to find any of your friends who attend the briefing to know the competition guidelines.

The 60 years Merdeka commemorative banknote will be in two denomination and sizes, RM60 and RM600 banknotes. You can also make a design for a vertical or normal banknotes. The RM60 banknote will be a bit bigger then the current RM50 baknnotes and the RM600 banknote will be the biggest Malaysia banknote in history.

We heard the main theme is Yang di-Pertuan Agong, 15 Yang di-Pertuan Agong faces maybe will be on the banknotes.

The submission deadline is on 5 August 2016, the competition winners announcement will be on October 2016. The commemorative banknote will be on sale one month before Merdeka 2017.

However, this is just a rumors since they're no official announcement about the banknote designs by BNM.

Obviously, the design competition is for Malaysia 60 years Merdeka Anniversary next year. I am not sure if BNM planned to make other commemorative banknotes for 2017 but if they do, next year we will have a lot of numismatic items to buy from BNM.

For your information, we already have 4 commemorative coins for 2016.

BNM also reopen the participation of a local professional designers for their design competition after closing it for Students of public / private universities for 2016 commemorative coins.

Hopefully we will see a much better design for the commemorative banknotes.

A Family Day Trip to Bagan Lalang  Gold Coast

The past weekend was a long one. On Saturday we decided to go to Gold Coast to find out what it is about after we have heard so much about it. After checking with some friends, all but one has ever been there. Even then, the feedback was not that encouraging. Since we had never been there, there was nothing to lose. After doing some simple research online, I roughly knew where we wanted to go: what to see, what to do and where to have lunch.
After we were done with our snack, we continued our journey to Sepang Gold Coast. It is another 10 minutes drive south of Tanjung Sepat. Upon reaching our final destination, I only realized that Sepang Gold Coast is the name of a resort in Bagan Lalang. What this means is these two places (Bagan Lalang and SGC) are sharing the same location/beach and the place is called Bagan Lalang.
We went to Sepang Gold Coast. This is Gold Coast of Malaysia not Australia’s Gold Coast. SGC has some water villas (arranged in a gigantic palm tree shape) for sale. It is still under construction and only open to public this May or June.
Why they use the name Gold Coast is beyond my understanding. As if there are no other better names that can reflect local identity.
Sorry I digress… Back to the beach.
To be frank, as I have found out from my friend, the beach is not fantastic to my standard. It is muddy and you won’t find fine, powderish sand there. It is far from that. Nevertheless, it is still better than nothing.
Despite all that, the three kids that I took along enjoyed the beach very much. So much so that we could have our “adult time” for an uninterrupted 30 minutes.
That showed how much the kids enjoyed the beach no matter what I think of it.

Food, Food, Food

After washing up in SGC, we were ready to have our late lunch at 3pm in Tanjung Sepat. Why Tanjung Sepat? Because there are not many eateries in Bagan Lalang and I read in one of the blogs that the blogger went to Tanjung Sepat for seafood. So I took her advice to complete our day trip with a seafood lunch at Restoran Hong Seng (on the blogger’s recommendation) – a sea front restaurant on Jalan Tepi Pantai.
We ordered five dishes: steamed fish, fried baby squids, fried prawns with oatmeal, veggie, and hot plate tofu. I like the fish and prawns. The squids were too soggy and not crunchy enough. The bill came to about 85 bucks which I think is reasonable. As you may now know, the town is famous among tourists for its food. I might go to Tanjung Sepat again for Ah Hock’s Bak Kut Teh and others.

Final Thoughts

The trip was awesome. I got to enjoy my drive and explorations of two new towns: Tanjung Sepat (which led me to the discovery of Tanjung Sepat’s pau) and Bagan Lalang. For the kids, they got the chance to enjoy the beach. Simply perfect!
If you are looking for ideas on where to go on weekends with your children, put this as one of your destinations.

If you fail to plan, you plan to fail

If you fail to plan, you plan to fail – jika anda gagal untuk merancang, anda merancang untuk gagal – itulah mentera yang sering disebut apabila memulakan sesuatu perkara.

Selamat berjaya!
