BNM has conducted two briefing sessions on 16
June (Thursday) and 17 June 2016 (Friday) at Theatrette, Muzium dan Galeri
Seni, Sasana Kijang, Bank Negara Malaysia.
Many local designer don't know they must come to
the briefing sessions to know what kind of banknotes they will be designing.
BNM don't stated in their statement that it is necessary to go to any of the
briefing sessions. I am not sure if only people who go to the briefing sessions
are allowed to join the competition.
From the information we received, BNM
distributed a CD cointaning information, rules and regulation about the
competition during briefing sessions on 16 and 17 June.
If any of you local designer who don't go to the
briefing session, you might want to try to contact the persons who are in
charge of the competition (you can get their contact in my earlier post). Maybe
they can give you the CD. If they can't give you any information, you need to
find any of your friends who attend the briefing to know the competition
guidelines.
The 60 years Merdeka commemorative banknote will
be in two denomination and sizes, RM60 and RM600 banknotes. You can also make a
design for a vertical or normal banknotes. The RM60 banknote will be a bit
bigger then the current RM50 baknnotes and the RM600 banknote will be the
biggest Malaysia banknote in history.
We heard the main theme is Yang di-Pertuan
Agong, 15 Yang di-Pertuan Agong faces maybe will be on the banknotes.
The submission deadline is on 5 August 2016, the
competition winners announcement will be on October 2016. The commemorative
banknote will be on sale one month before Merdeka 2017.
However, this is just a rumors since they're no
official announcement about the banknote designs by BNM.
Obviously, the design competition is for Malaysia 60 years Merdeka Anniversary next year. I am not sure if BNM planned to make other commemorative banknotes for 2017 but if they do, next year we will have a lot of numismatic items to buy from BNM.
For your information, we already have 4 commemorative coins for 2016.
BNM also reopen the participation of a local
professional designers for their design competition after closing it for
Students of public / private universities for 2016 commemorative coins.
Hopefully we will see a much better design for the commemorative banknotes.
